Festivals and traditions

The San Bernardo Fair is certainly the most important and characteristic festival of Macugnaga, celebrated every summer during the first weekend of July.

Created with the goal of giving new life to the ancient Assumption Fair, which was already being held in Macugnaga in the medieval period, the San Bernardo Fair calls upon an ever greater number of artisans every year who display their products demonstrating different processing techniques.

Wood and stone sculptures, ceramics, embroidery, woven baskets, wrought iron, work tools, and miniature reproductions of the Walser houses are the main artisanal products on display and for sale during the fair.

The exhibitors come not just from the Monte Rosa valleys, but also from the Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Lombardy, nearby Switzerland, and Alto Adige.

As well as the San Bernardo Fair, there are many other events celebrated in Macugnaga, such as the Giornata del Latte (Day of Milk) or the Giornata della Lana (Day of Wool), revisiting days of rural life to remember a distant past.
