Monte Rosa is the broadest massif in the Alps, the second by height after Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Switzerland and the second-highest in Italy. It has another record: a mountainous alpine chain with the highest average altitude, it gathers nine of the top twenty highest summits in all the Alps.
The toponym Monte Rosa does not derive, as you might be led to imagine, from the rosy tones that often colour the massif at dawn, but from the Latin rosia, through the local dialect term rouése or rouja, which means “glacier”.
The Anzasca Valley extends for 30 kilometres west of the Val d’Ossola: it starts in Piedimulera, from which the road climbs along the narrow valley and rises to Calasca-Castiglione, considered one of the most charming corners of the area for its typical stone architecture. You then continue towards Antrogna, where the splendid “Cathedral in the Woods” rises, and Bannio Anzino, once the main town of the Anzasca Valley, which preserves the ancient tradition of the historical militia. Continuing on, you encounter the villages of Vanzone con San Carlo, with its Torre di Battiggio castle and its Acqua Vanzonis spring, Ceppo Morelli, and Campioli.
Having exceeded 1,000 m in altitude, you reach Pestarena, the first municipal district of the town of Macugnaga and known as the town of gold. Drawing even closer to Macugnaga, you encounter Borca, from where the paths for the enchanting Lago delle Fate (Lake of the Fairies) start.
